The Space Between Reaction and Response

We spend a lot of time trying to change what’s happening around us.

The conversation.

The schedule.

The circumstance.

What if the place to begin isn’t out there?

What if it’s with one conscious breath?

Here’s a practice I’ve returned to for years, especially when life feels fast.

Before you respond to an email. Before you walk into a meeting. Before you pick up your phone. Before you say the thing you might regret.

Pause.

Take three slow, intentional breaths.

On the first breath, notice your body. Where are you holding tension?

On the second, notice your mind. What’s the story you’re already telling?

On the third, let go of fixing anything. Just be here.

Then move.

Three breaths won’t solve your problems.

They will change the place you’re responding from.

Over time, that’s what transforms a life.

Not one big breakthrough.

Hundreds of small moments where you interrupt the automatic and choose the intentional.

That’s why we practice.

Not to become better at yoga.

To become more present for our lives.

And here’s what I’ve found: practicing this for three breaths is powerful. Practicing it over four uninterrupted days changes something deeper.

When you remove the distractions, commit to the work, and immerse yourself in movement, meditation, breath, and inquiry, you begin to see patterns that are nearly impossible to notice in the middle of everyday life.
