Discovering the Leader Within — A Reflection from Kenya By Baron Baptiste

There are moments that mark you forever.
Kenya was one of those moments.

When we gathered in the red clay of the Masai Mara and stepped foot into the vibrant halls of Legacy College, we weren’t just there to teach—we were there to listen, to learn, and to lead… differently.

I watched people walk into that space carrying decades of leadership armor—titles, responsibilities, expectations—and leave standing taller, but with softer hearts. The kind of strength that doesn’t need to shout. The kind that leads by presence.

We were joined by Martin Luther King III, his wife Andrea, and their daughter Yolanda—a family that holds a profound legacy of justice and love. Being with them reminded us that leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice in the room, but the most rooted one.

We were honored by Masai warriors, welcomed into ancient traditions, and surrounded by the beauty and wildness of the land. The land itself became a teacher—unapologetic, expansive, and alive.

In our time together, we stripped away the noise.
We confronted our stories.
We faced resistance.
And we found something deeper than strategy or systems—
We found the truth of who we are.

Leadership, as we experienced it in Kenya, is not about knowing all the answers.
It’s about being willing to ask new questions.
To lead from the inside out.
To serve from a place of wholeness, not hustle.

This retreat wasn’t a performance.
It was a practice.
It was a pilgrimage back to the self.

And it’s only the beginning.
