The Voice That Gets Loud Right Before You Change

Most people think they’re stuck because they don’t know what to do next.

More often, they’re stuck because of a voice.

You probably know it well. It tends to show up right when you’re about to do something that matters:

  • Who do you think you are?

  • This isn’t the right time.

  • You’re not ready yet.

It can sound practical, reasonable, even responsible.

But if you listen closely, that voice usually has one job:

Keep things exactly as they are.

What Your Inner Critic Is Really Doing

It’s easy to think of this voice as self-sabotage. But underneath it, there’s usually a simpler intention:

Protection.

Protection from failure, rejection, discomfort, or being fully seen.

At some point in your life, those protective strategies may have served you well. The problem is that they often stick around long after they’re needed.

So when you’re considering something meaningful—a new opportunity, a difficult conversation, or a transformational experience like Level One: Journey Into Power—the same old voice shows up with the same old script.

The Moment Before Growth

I’ve seen a common pattern over the years.

Someone feels called toward something bigger. They begin imagining what’s possible.

Then the inner critic gets loud.

Most people assume the voice is telling the truth:

“Maybe later.”

“I need to be more ready.”

“This is too big a leap.”

So they back away.

Life stays the same.

But growth rarely happens when everything feels comfortable. In fact, discomfort is often a sign that you’re standing at the edge of change.

A Different Response

The next time that voice appears, try this:

Name it.
Recognize it for what it is. “This is the part of me that’s afraid.”

Thank it.
Acknowledge its intention. “Thank you for trying to keep me safe.”

Lead it.
Choose your next step anyway. “I hear you, and I’m moving forward.”

You don’t need to eliminate fear before you act. You simply need to stop giving it the final say.

What Happens at Level One

Many people arrive at Level One convinced they aren’t ready, experienced enough, flexible enough, or qualified enough.

What they discover is that nearly everyone has heard the same voice.

Through practice, coaching, and honest self-inquiry, they learn to recognize that inner critic without letting it run their lives.

The voice may not disappear, but it loses its grip.

And that changes far more than what happens on a yoga mat.

If you’ve been thinking about Level One and your inner critic is getting louder, consider this:

The voice that gets loud right before you change is not a stop sign. It’s often a signal that what you’re considering truly matters.
